Luz began, without a name, in 2009 on the beaches of Sunset Island, a quiet spot on the southern coast of North Carolina. Guitarist-vocalist Stephen Morrison started hammering out songs quietly in the upstairs room of his parents' vacation rental, in the cooling glare of a late-October shore, and it somehow seemed to him that it was the right time to record. He stumbled into the help of generous friends and musicians around his native Charlotte, NC. There would be a 3-song solo demo, he thought, which soon turned into a 5-song demo with a full band, and then a 6-song e.p. emerged, arranged with the aid of a group of people more and more closely involved in the sound those songs were making. Then there was a band, awkward and shimmering, unexpected and alive. As improbable as anything thus far. So here is a sound and a show that is in search of that Platonic existence in the realm of ideal things, the perfect and distant idea of a song that sets people writing all their lives. Here is a band of excitedly dissatisfied wanderers, in love with the sounds the world makes and the stage that all that world is to them. Here is a band that is somehow Rock & Roll, because what else would you call it? Because, sometime just before something gets a label, there are just folks who love what it is in, in that moment. Luz is an act at home both on stage and on tape, with that wild feeling of looking for a sound exactly like the one they want most to hear themselves, honestly believing that you'll love it too, their search and their sound. They'll be on your road soon, so keep your eyes on the horizon and see for yourself.
